A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

The Babadook is a 2014 Australian-Canadian psychological horror film, written and directed by Jennifer Kent as her directorial debut,[3] in which a woman and her son are tormented by an evil entity. The film stars Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, while Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear appear in supporting roles. The Babadook was produced by Causeway Films (Kristina Ceyton) and is based on the short film Monster (2005), also written and directed by Kent.

The Babadook was initially not a strong commercial success in its native Australia and was given a limited release in mostly art house theatres.[4] However, the film was shown at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim.[5][6] Largely thanks to its enthusiastic response at Sundance, the film generated more attention in the United States and Europe which ultimately helped its reputation in Australia. Critical opinion of The Babadook was favourable, with many critics praising it for its avoidance of gore or clichéd jump scares and reliance on slow-burning suspense
